The Bethel Community Transformation Center is a fiscally-sponsored project of Breakers Covenant Church International, a 501(c)3 religious non-profit organization based in Detroit, Michigan. See our Guidestar profile here.

Just Announced!

Breakers Covenant Church International has received $250,000.00 from the National Fund for Sacred Places, a program of Partners for Sacred Places in collaboration with the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

This funding will support our 18 month renovation project. The NFSP grant will allow us to begin our project to repair crucial areas of the building, which in turn will significantly increase the space needed for our diverse programs that address mental health, family and social welfare, job readiness, and financial strength for North End neighborhood residents and the greater Detroit community by stabilizing critical areas inside and outside the building. Areas include spalling the shifting of loose bricks and limestone, replacing exterior windows & stairs, and restoring the gymnasium.

Breakers Covenant Church International is one of 16 organizations to receive a total of over $3.5 million in grant funding that provides training, planning grants, technical assistance, capacity-building support, and capital grants to congregations of all faiths.

Now in its eighth year, the National Fund has awarded or pledged over $21.5 million to 113 community-serving congregations representing 39 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. So far, this grantmaking has resulted in over $3 leveraged for every grant dollar invested in participating congregations. How My Funds Will be Spent

We are raising funds to kickstart the restoration of the building and create meaningful programming inside of it: this will be a years-long, multi-million dollar restoration and renovation project that will create jobs, unite our fractured faith and racial communities, and inspire hope in a better day for Detroit. Here’s what this campaign will do:

  • Seal the building interior from the elements with emergency roof repairs
  • Repair our elevator to make all the floors accessible
  • Renovate our restrooms
  • Cover our maintenance and operating costs while we seek future investment
  • Retain an architecture firm specializing in historic building preservation/renovation

These immediate investments will prepare our facility for further occupancy and sustainability, maximizing the use of the entire building including the main sanctuary. These renovations will also set the stage for pursuing complete restoration!

We’ll keep you, our backers, posted as we transform the building – and each of your names will be inscribed on the donor Wall of Honor as a testament to your belief in our mission together. To keep costs down initially, we’ve already engaged hundreds of volunteers from around the country who’ve come to visit us and take part in the restoration. In fact, we’ve been engaged in this work for nearly three years already! In that time, we’ve stabilized the building by catching up on decades of deferred maintenance. This Kickstarter will prepare the space for the major overhaul ahead.

Accountability

We take your support serious, and are committed to full financial transparency under the guidance of our 501(c)3 fiscal sponsor, Breakers Covenant Church International. We have a Board of Directors composed of leaders in the faith and secular community that oversees our fundraising and tracks the progress and expenditure of funds. Got any questions? Drop us a line!
